Why do they hit monks in Zen?
Dogen answers:
"Hitting a man means making the man."
打人といふは作人といはんがごとし
[dajin to iu wa sajin to iwan ga gotoshi]
(Ganzei 眼睛, «Shobogenzo»)
That's how they make the monks conscious of their hologram.
