Tao Te Ching Chapter 55-4 No hitting
Today's Tao
Eagles and hawks don't hit him. (Ch.55)
You are safe if you are like a baby.
Nothing can hurt you unless you judge it.
No one hits you.
He is hitting your hologram.
Why do they hit monks in Zen?
Dogen answers:
"Hitting a man means making the man."
打人といふは作人といはんがごとし
[dajin to iu wa sajin to iwan ga gotoshi]
(Ganzei 眼睛, «Shobogenzo»)
That's how they make the monks conscious of their hologram.

Tao answers your question!
☞Wait! Before you pick up a Zen or Tao book in a bookstore, please consider reading Hermann Hesse's«Siddhartha» first. This is an effective preparation before you jump into the swamp of Easter philosophies. Having said that, be aware that the novel is not a biography of Buddha. To learn about the life of the founder of Buddhism, Osamu Tezuka's cartoon «Buddha» is quite handy. Osamu Tezuka is the creator of Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion among others.
