Tao is "the greatest control".

It cannot be divided, so don't split any.

Since everything is one, the idea of dividing something does not suit Tao.

So, don't judge. Don't tell good from evil.

Do nothing and accept all.

This is the greatest control of all.

Why don't we give Tao a bit more credit.

Tao knows. Tao flows.

-I am so glad that Donald Keene chose Ryotaro Shiba among the five modern Japanese novelists along with Jun' ichiro Tanizaki, Yasunari Kawabata, Kobo Abe, and Yukio Mishima. Ryotaro Shiba is extremely popular in Japan and very productive in terms of the volume and number of his works. It is surprising to know that only a handful of his novels have been translated into English so far. Nevertheless, I see some change. The translator of the book on the left is Donald Keene, who is definitely the best researcher of Japanese literature outside, and probably inside as well, the Japanese archipelago. So, an untouched, uncarved piece of wood is the symbol of natural state.

When you take off your clothes and social mask, who are you?

You are an uncarved block, which is Tao.

You play in your life and go back to Tao.

-Kukai, pronounced like KooKaï. His name means the empty sea (or sky sea). Dogen, pronouced like daw ghen. His name means the origin of Tao. Both went to China to learn Buddhism. The former came back to Japan with plenty of sutras. The latter with nothing. The former used the mandala. The latter was not interested in objects.

You are already there.

You are a runner standing at your goal and waiting to start.

-Jizo knows it. We don't really have to squat in an exotic fashion. We can lay ourselves like a Buddha in the tropics. We don't have to be serious to be a Buddhist. Kanzan and Juttoku are laughing at you. Jizo Bosatsu are the ones who are standing at the crossroads of Buddhism and Shintoism. They will never ask you for any sacrifice, but they are always with you like a good friend. If you really want to show some respect to them, just offer them a piece of onigiri, the rice ball. A left-over hamburger will do, too.

Under the sky = Hologram


So, "Be the valley under the sky" means "Be one with Tao the nothingness while living in your hologram".

Don't look down on your hologram you are living with.

It is the manifestation of Tao.

Zen Master Dogen says:

"The true prayers are «ten nooks and crannies of the whole world», «mountains, rivers and lands», «grasses, trees, you, and non-you»". (Jishozanmai 自証三昧, «Shobogenzo»)

2. Keep female attitude. Do nothing, and your hologram will transform itself.

3. Be the valley. Be void. Being void means accepting all.

4. Then, you will remember that you are Tao. This is constancy.

5. Be like a baby.

6. There is neither black nor white. No dichotomy 二見なし [niken nashi].

(The male and female attitudes above have nothing to do with men and women. They are simply expressions used by Lao Tzu to express certain types of behavior.)

Then, the attainment of constancy will never leave you. (Ch.28)


Tao is constant and omnipresent.

"The attainment of constancy 常得／徳 [jou toku]" means the attainment of Tao.

By accepting all the rest of the world (=your hologram), you can remember that you are Tao.

This is the attainment of Tao 道得／道徳.

In fact, Tao is always with you and never leaves you (because true You are Tao itself).

But, sometimes, you forget the fact.

It is the cause of all the sufferings.

In Taoism, the valley means "vacuum", "void", or "emptiness".

"Emptiness" means Tao.

This is one of the keys to understand Taoism.
