Tao Te Ching Chapter 76-10 Hoben gate / Soft & Weak

Today's Tao

The soft and weak stays high. (Ch.76)

"The soft and weak" thing is a hologram, which stays high, that is to say, at the superficial level.

If you want to mature spiritually, what do you have to do?

Meditate for thirty years?

No.

You can mature right now right here.

All you have to do is to open the gate of Dark Depth Female. (☞See The root of heaven and earth 6-3 and Tao Te Ching Chapter 6 Valley God)

It is also called "the gate of various surprises" (☞See Reverse Thinking 1-9 and Tao Te Ching Chapter 1 Gateway to Tao)

and

"Heaven's gate" (☞See Tao Te Ching Chapter 10 Magic words).

In Buddhism, Buddha calls it "the gate of Hoben 方便門",

which means "the gate of Buddha's tool to enlighten people".

(Shohojisso 諸法実相, «Shobogenzo»)

How can you open the gate?

It is easy.

You have only to accept the world in front of you (=your hologram).

Then, what do you see after it opens itself?

Exactly the same scenery.

But do you see the difference?

Tao Te Ching Chapter 66-1 100 valleys

Today's Tao

The reason why big rivers and the sea can be the king of hundreds of valleys is that the former is well down the latter. Therefore, they can be the king of hundreds of valleys. (Ch.66)

Let's decode these sentences word by word.

"Big rivers and the sea" imply Tao.

So, the king is Tao.

The king of what, then?

"A valley" means void.

Do you remember? (☞See Valley 28-3)

The void is Tao.

The expression "Hundreds of valleys" here is a beautiful metaphor of the holograms filled with Tao's energy.

And down below you have the far greater mass of Tao's energy as the ocean lies below the valleys.

Zen Buddhists use the metaphor of "dewdrops reflecting the moon".

Holograms look independent like dewdrops.

But they cannot help reflecting the moon.

The moon is true You, which is Tao.

Tao's light is called Mugeko 無碍光: the light that lights up everything.

If you put together the two sentences, you can make a full cycle of "big rivers and the sea" → "valleys" → "big rivers and the sea", that is, hologram → Tao → hologram. It is the Yin Yang circle. Please do not think that a hologram and Tao are two separate entities.

☞"You have to work hard to get what you want." I wonder where we got this strange idea. In Buddhism, Amida Butsu (Amitābha Buddha) is the one who is in charge of "what you want". Basically, he gives you all, even your desire of wanting something. Therefore, you have already got what you want. If you haven't got one thing that you seem to want, in fact you don't want it. This Buddha of Infinite Light is also called Mugeko Butsu in Japanese.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 55-6 Male organ

Today's Tao

Although he doesn't know the intercourse of a male and a female yet, his male organ erects itself. (Ch.55)

A baby without intention or desire is in the state of Bumo Misho Izen 父母未生以前, which means "before the father and the mother are born".

The father, a male, meets the mother, a female in the valley, which is Tao.

The intercourse of a male and a female suggests the Yin Yang circle, which is the prayer wheel and the cycle of Tao's energy.

Your hologram will be projected in the cycle as a baby's male organ erects itself naturally.

Whether you are aware of it or not, the wheel called Life keeps on turning.

A baby doesn't know the mechanism.

Then, would you still like to know it?

Tao Te Ching Chapter 40-9 Highest attainment = Valley

Today's Tao

The highest attainment seems like a valley. (Ch.40)

"A valley" means void.

As you all know, this is one of Tao Te Ching's key words.

If you are void, you have attained Tao.

"The highest attainment = Valley"

means

"Void = Tao = true You".

You don't have to do anything to attain Tao.

You already are.

But don't be misled by the word "void".

"Void" is plentiful.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 39-12 Inexhaustible valley

Today's Tao

If the valley were not filled, it might be exhausted. (Ch.39)

"The valley" means void.

So, Lao Tzu wants to say:

"void is filled and inexhaustible".

In Zen Buddhism, they say:

"無一物中無尽蔵 [mu ichi motsu chu mu jin zo]"

no / one / thing / inside / no / limit / storage

Each Kanji / Chinese character has the signification in this order.

It can be translated as:

"nothingness has an unlimited storage."

Sometimes, I wonder.

All the computer jargons and the internet technology may exist as a metaphor in order to explain us how Tao works.

It is just like Ikkyu's «Yama Uba» play, which tells us how Zen functions.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 39-5 Filled valley

Today's Tao

The valley attained One and got filled. (Ch.39)

In Taoism, "the valley" means emptiness.

"Valley God exists any time any where", says Lao Tzu in Chapter 6. (☞See also Valley God 6-1)

Once the emptiness gets Tao's energy, it gets filled and becomes a hologram.

The hologram constitutes the so-called world.

What you think has colours is in fact a hologram and emptiness.

色-[shiki]=colour (☞See Tao by Matsumoto / Chapter 4b / Color)

即-[soku]=just (or immediate)

是-[ze]=be

空-[kuu]=emptiness (or sky)

色即是空 [shiki soku ze ku]

空即是色 [ku soku ze shiki]

"Colour is justly nothing.

Nothing is justly colour. " (Heart Sutra 般若心経)

That's how the Buddhists summarize the mechanism.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 32-9 Valleys & the Sea

Today's Tao

Tao is to the world under the sky as streams and valleys are to big rivers and the sea. (Ch.32)

Here, some simple equations to decode Tao Te Ching.

Tao = Valley = vacuum

world under the sky = big rivers and the sea = holograms (= the manifestations of Tao)

Tao the vacuum sustains the holograms as Ikkyu's Yama Uba, the old woman in the mountains, helps the workers.

Something invisible sustains something visible.

Something seemingly empty sustains something apparently concrete.

Now you know what they mean by:

"Colour is justly nothing. Nothing is justly colour. 色即是空。空即是色。" (Heart Sutra 般若心経)

The holograms you see is, in fact, empty.

Tao the vacuum creates them.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 28-10 Under the sky

Today's Tao

Be the valley under the sky. (Ch.28)

Valley = Void

Under the sky = Hologram

So, "Be the valley under the sky" means "Be one with Tao the nothingness while living in your hologram".

Don't look down on your hologram you are living with.

It is the manifestation of Tao.

Zen Master Dogen says:

"The true prayers are «ten nooks and crannies of the whole world», «mountains, rivers and lands», «grasses, trees, you, and non-you»". (Jishozanmai 自証三昧, «Shobogenzo»)

Tao Te Ching Chapter 28-9 Valley, male, female

Today's Tao

Be the valley under the sky. (Ch.28)

The valley is the point where the male meets the female.

When we touch the nothingness, our mind is totally void.

We are happy to be empty.

All of them are saying the same thing.

Accept all.

If you cannot cherish this nothingness, it is no use talking about Zen.

Isn't it right, Master Ikkyu?

Tao Te Ching Chapter 28-8 Protect Darkness

Today's Tao

Protect its darkness. (Ch.28)

Stay with Dark Depth 玄 [gen], which is Tao.

How can we do that?

1. Learn the limit of male attitude. No direct action.

2. Keep female attitude. Do nothing, and your hologram will transform itself.

3. Be the valley. Be void. Being void means accepting all.

4. Then, you will remember that you are Tao. This is constancy.

5. Be like a baby.

6. There is neither black nor white. No dichotomy 二見なし [niken nashi].

(The male and female attitudes above have nothing to do with men and women. They are simply expressions used by Lao Tzu to express certain types of behavior.)

Tao Te Ching Chapter 15-9 Empty

Today's Tao

Empty, as if he were a valley. (Ch.15)

A: "Be empty."

B: "Sir,... Excuse me, sir. How can I be empty?

A: "Empty your mind."

B: "Yes, sir."

B tries to empty his mind.

B: "No, sir, I can't do it. I can't do it. Oh, my god! There must be something wrong with me. Something wrong with me!"

Don't worry.

Nobody needs to empty his mind.

Don't waste your time and energy. It doesn't matter if you can do it or not.

Your mind and body are a hologram. In a sense, you are already empty.

Then, what does "Be empty." mean really?

It means:

"No resistance. Accept all".

☞See Tao by Matsumoto / Chapter 6 / Valley God. The word "valley" is always associated with emptiness, vacuum, and void in Tao Te Ching.

Buddhists say:

Colour is justly equal to emptiness. Emptiness is justly equal to colour.

色即是空。空即是色。

[Shiki soku ze ku. Ku soku ze shiki.]

Dogen adds:

Colour is colour. Emptiness justly emptiness.

色是色なり。空即空なり。

(Makahannya Haramitsu 摩訶般若波羅蜜, «Shobogenzo»)

Naoto Matsumoto says:

You say Potato. I say Potahto.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 28-3 Valley

Today's Tao

Be the valley under the sky. (Ch.28)

In Taoism, the valley means "vacuum", "void", or "emptiness".

"Emptiness" means Tao.

This is one of the keys to understand Taoism.

Be Tao because you are Tao.

Forget about your mind and body.

They are part of your hologram like clouds in the sky.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 16-1 Do emptiness

Today's Tao

Do emptiness perfectly. (Ch.16)

When you first face an oriental philosophy, "emptiness" is kind of an obstacle, which may discourage you to approach it.

The idea is sometimes expressed as "sky" in Buddhism.

Sky is just colour. Colour is just sky.

It sounds enigmatically poetic, but it may mean nothing to you.

Emptiness is acceptance.

So, today's sentence means "Accept all".

Tao Te Ching Chapter 6-4 No limit

Today's Tao

With no limit, it always stays here. (Ch.6)

In the previous article "The root of heaven and earth", we discussed "The gate of Dark Depth Female".

The image of "a gate" and "a female" makes me think about Japanese Zen monk Ikkyu's poem.

If I ever forget about the deep kindness of Ya of Shin's,

I will keep on reincarnating in a bestial body forever.

"Ya" in this poem suggests "a female gate" or "a feminine valley".

Tao Te Ching Chapter 6-3 The root of heaven and earth

Today's Tao

The gate of Dark Depth Female is called the root of heaven and earth. (Ch.6)

As I mentioned in the previous article (Dark Depth Female 6-2),

Dark Depth Female = Valley God (empty spirit / emptiness).

Now, if you add the word "gate" to the former, it becomes:

The gate of Dark Depth Female = the root of heaven and earth.

"Heaven and earth" is very often read as your hologram.

So, it means that the starting point of emptiness is where the hologram is originated.

In short, Tao is the origin of the hologram.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 6-2 Dark Depth Female

Today's Tao

This is called Dark Depth Female. (Ch.6)

The sentence follows the one that we discussed yesterday (Valley God).

So, it means: Valley God = Dark Depth Female

Dark Depth Female is a literal English translation for 玄牝 [gen pi / hsüan pin / xuán pìn] (☞See Dark Depth and Dark Depth Female in Tao by Matsumoto for details).

This is a fascinating Taoist technique to control your reality without controlling it.

In order to change the world (=your hologram), a female-like passivity is, in fact, quite active a way.

You suppress your resistance and accelerate the transformation of the hologram.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 6-1 Valley God

Today's Tao

Valley God exists any time any where. (Ch. 6)

"Valley God" is a literal English translation for 谷神 ([gŭ shén] in Chinese, [koku shin] in Japanese / Hopefully, your browser can show the characters correctly. / 谷 [gŭ, koku]means "valley". 神 [shén, shin] means "god, spirit")

The word "valley" symbolises emptiness.

But emptiness doesn't mean nothing exists there.

The empty space is full of energy. It is a "field" (Zero Point Field?).

The world is the empty space.

The fact that Lao Tzu knew it more than two thousand years ago surprised Fritjof Capra, and he wrote a book called "Tao of Physics".

Anyway, my question is where is Valley God, or the space.

It is inside your mind. It is a hologram.

That's exactly why it is called Valley God, empty spirit.
