Tao Te Ching Chapter 81-7 Tao in Heaven

Today's Tao

Heaven's Tao gives benefits and does not damage any. (Ch.81)

"Heaven" signifies "this world right here right now", which is your hologram.

Therefore, "Heaven's Tao" means Tao in a hologram, that is to say, Tao manifested as a hologram.

This manifestation is called Hossho 法性 in Buddhism.

Your life is Hossho.

Don't worry about how you live and how others live.

All the lives are more or less the same.

Your life that manifests itself right here right now is the most important.

Don't worry about someone else's criteria to judge a man's life.

When you see them in a book or on TV, just say "thanks" and ignore them.

Gratitude is an act of sending Love (=Tao).

All the acts take place in a hologram.

So, an act of sending Love takes place in a hologram, which is the life right here right now.

That's why you must not despise this world.

You receive "Tao's Love" and all the hologram it projects.

Zen Master Dogen says:

"You must not look at anywhere but this world in order to meet Buddha".

いわゆる世界は十方みな仏世界なり

(Kobutsushin 古仏心, «Shobogenzo»)

Meeting Buddha is receiving Love.

It takes place on your face. (☞See Face Transmission / Menju / Beauty 80-8)

That's why Dogen asks you to wash your face and body well. (Senjo 洗浄, «Shobogenzo»; Senmen 洗面, «Shobogenzo»)

The world is an extension of your body.

Keep your face clean.

It is one easy and practical way to accept this world.

«Recommended Books 17» Zen Master Ikkyu was a good friend of Konparu Zenchiku, a dancer/actor of Noh theatre. This eccentric duo wrote and performed «Yama Uba» in a village in medieval Japan. You can study Zen Buddhism, but studying something is not necessarily living it. Rather, you can learn Zen without analyzing Sutras and Mantras. Meditation will certainly help you find out what Zen is, but if you think squatting a la Japonaise will teach it better than theatre does, you will never learn what it is. You can even learn Zen while frying French fries at a diner. Peter Brook's «Empty Space» inevitably makes a Japanese think about "Ma 間", spacial or sonic emptiness. The Japanese have been considering it as the rich source of creativity. If you find the concept of Everything = Nothing a bit too hard to grasp, why don't you look to this theatrical genius for advice? You don't have to go straight to the gate of Tao or Zen. Anne Bogart will show you some backstage door to get in there. Read her «Viewpoint», and you will see why theatre is a good friend of Zen Buddhism.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 80-8 Face transmission / Menju / Beauty

Today's Tao

Make them appreciate the beauty of their clothes. (Ch.80)

The face is the place where the contact between Tao and a hologram takes place.

Zen Master Dogen puts it this way:

"Face-giving [Menju 面授/ Face (to face) transmission] is receiving and giving at the face."

面授は面処の受授なり

(Menju 面授, «Shobogenzo 正法眼蔵»)

Your face is the interface between Tao and a hologram.

That's why you cannot see the face.

You can see only an interpretation of it, such as your reflection on the mirror or the reputation.

Since it is the important interface, let's keep it clean.

Therefore, Dogen painstakingly explains how to wash the face and other body parts. (Senjo 洗浄, Senmen 洗面; «Shobogenzo 正法眼蔵»)

Your body is a manifestation of Tao (=Love, =Buddha).

By washing it, you can emit Love (=Tao, =Buddha).

That's one basic way to keep Tao's energy circulating.

Your clothes are an extension of your face.

Forget someone else's criteria.

Please appreciate your beautiful clothes, your beautiful body, and your beautiful face.

[Note]
The titles of the two chapters in Shobogenzo above, that is to say, Japanese words "Senjo 洗浄" and "Senmen 洗面", signify "wash" and "washing the face" respectively.

«Recommended Books 5» When you travel in an unknown territory, you might be happy to have a guide. If he is good, your journey will be safe and fun. The best Japanese guide to Zen in English is, without question, Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki. It is a pity that this learned scholar did not translate Dogen's «Shobogenzo» into English. He may have had thousands of reasons not to do it, and his decision was wise. Still, many Zen learners in the non-Japanese speaking world cannot help imagining how enormous his contribution to the humanity would be if he had done it. This excellent guide with a hearty sense of humor wrote a summary of Zen Master Ikkyu's play «Yama Uba» in his «Zen and Japanese Culture». Ikkyu, who would be a cynic poet dressed in a John Galliano dress if he lived now, wrote the play in order to tell how Zen functions. Tao Te Ching Chapter 79-4 No favoritism

Today's Tao

Heaven's Tao has no favoritism. It is always on the side of a good person. (Ch.79)

"Heaven" means your hologram as the word "sky" does.

So, Heaven's Tao signifies Tao's energy inside all the beings in the hologram.

In other words, it is Hossho 法性, the nature of manifestation. (☞See Hossho stays low 76-9)

Tao does not judge.

It seems that the limited capacity of human beings judge.

Tao's energy inside your hologram has no favoritism.

There is neither good nor bad in Tao.

Then, what does "a good person" mean?

"A good person" means you.

True You are Tao.

Therefore, only you can sustain the Tao/hologram mechanism, Shin 心.

Japanese philosopher Kitaro Nishida 西田幾多郎 (1870 - 1945) says:

"Practically speaking, we have only one true Good, which is to find out the true Self. That's all."

(translated by Naoto Matsumoto; Book III, Chapter 13, The Perfect Good Action, «A Study of the Good 善の研究» ☞See A study of the Good 49-3 and Goodness 49-5)

[Note]
What is the true Self?
"It is the true body of the cosmos", Nishida answers. (Ditto)
The true body of the cosmos is the Tao/hologram mechanism, Shin 心.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 76-9 Hossho stays low

Today's Tao

The strong and big stays low. (Ch.76)

What is the strongest and biggest of all?

Certainly, it is Tao.

Do you remember Tao's nickname is Big? (☞See Big 25-9)

Like water, Tao look for a lower place, which you cannot see. (☞See Tao by Matsumoto / Tao Te Ching Chapter 8 / Be like Water)

In a sense, Tao remains in the shadow of every phenomenon.

Zen Master Dogen puts it this way:

"It puts its body into storage, and the shadow is more exposed."

(Mitsugo 密語, «Shobogenzo»)

Zen Master Ikkyu uses the metaphor of Tao (=Buddha, =Zen) being in the shadow of everything in his «Yama Uba».

Yama Uba, the old woman in the mountains, helps everyone in his shadow.

He doesn't know what she is doing.

You don't know what Tao is doing in your shadow.

When you commit a mistake, it is not your fault. Tao is just sending you Love (=Tao).

In Buddhism, it is called Hossho 法性, the nature of manifestation.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 74-3 Fear of End

Today's Tao

If people are always afraid of the end of life, I can arrest those who do something strange and end their life. Who dares? (Ch.74)

Don't be fooled by strange stories.

"After the decomposition of your body, your soul goes to the sea of eternity."

Has anyone told you something like that?

Watch out!

Those who say something strange as this are worth being arrested, Lao Tzu insists.

Zen Master Dogen repeatedly cautions us:

"We must not think that our individual spirit goes somewhere after life.

There is no such thing as the sea of eternity."

(Soku shin ze butsu 即心是仏 and Bendowa 弁道話, «Shobogenzo». ☞See also The body decomposes 16-17)

There is no such a thing as an individual spirit.

Life is like a stack of cards.

Holograms are the cards and life is a stack of them, we can think.

Life does not exist as a being.

It is a name for the combination of holograms.

If life doesn't exist, no one can scare us, telling the end of it.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 72-1 Big's fear

Today's Tao

If people are not afraid of fear, Big's fear arrives. (Ch.72)

Don't be afraid of anything.

Even fear itself.

Fear is part of the world, which is your hologram.

All your feelings belong to the hologram as the clouds in the sky belong to the world.

Isn't it a bit strange to be afraid of the world?

Because you are the one who projects this hologram.

When you accept this world as a hologram, "Big's fear arrives".

Do you remember that "Big" is a nickname to Tao? (☞See Chapter 25 Manifestation)

"Big's fear" suggests the uneasy sensation you feel when you remember that you are always one with Tao.

This uncomfortable feeling of something being missing is very important.

Zen Master Dogen explains it:

"When the manifestation fills up the body and mind mechanism, it feels that something is missing somehow".

法もし身心に充足すれば、ひとかたはたらずとおぼゆるなり。

(Genjokoan 現成公案, «Shobogenzo»)

Since you are perfect, cherish your uneasy "fear" of imperfection.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 68-1 True samurai

Today's Tao

A true samurai doesn't fight. (Ch.68)

It is as clear as day.

If you don't fight, you will never be defeated.

The noun "samurai" came from the verb "saburau", which meant "to wait on" in the senses of "to attend or serve" and "to pay a respectful visit to".

A true samurai doesn't fight.

Or, at least, he does not look for a fight.

If it is inevitable to fight, he accept it.

He does not fight against fighting, either.

He does not fight against his hologram.

He knows that his act, the body, the enemy, and the fight itself are manifestations of Buddha (=Tao).

Tao Te Ching Chapter 67-7 Don't waste holograms

Today's Tao

The second one is not to waste any. (Ch.67)

The second treasure is "not to waste" any in your hologram.

Don't waste any because everything is the manifestation of Tao.

It is a catalyst asking you to emit more Tao (=Love).

Accept all with gratitude whether they are good or bad, and you will not waste any.

For example, chew everything well.

You are eating someone else's life whether it is an animal or a plant.

Assimilate its energy into your body with respect.

Not only food but everything is Master Dogen's "painted rice-cake / Gabyo 画餅", which stimulates you to fill Tao's mechanism with the energy of Love (=Tao).

Tao Te Ching Chapter 67-3 Ordinary?

Today's Tao

If I were ordinary and looked like my parents, I would long have been small. (Ch.67)

You are special because true You are Tao.

Be courageous to say:

天上天下唯我独尊

[tenjo tenge yuiga doku son]

"Above heave, below heaven, I am the only respectable being".

The baby Buddha said this when he was born.

This baby Buddha is you.

Don't try to be "ordinary" like others.

If you try to be ordinary, you will be stuck in your hologram.

This is the state of being "small".

You will be stuck in your "small" self, or mind, or body.

Aren't you thinking that you are a "small" part of the world?

No. You are the biggest and most respectable of all because you are the one who projects it.

How can you be ordinary!

Tao Te Ching Chapter 66-5 Harmless

Today's Tao

He puts himself before people, but they find him harmless. (Ch.66)

Even though true You are the creator of the world, which is your hologram, people inside it don't know it.

Even your own self doesn't know it.

This is the origin of suffering.

Zen Master Dogen says:

身先の心あり、身後の心あり。

[shinsen no shin ari, shingo no shin ari]

"There is a mechanism before the body. There is a mechanism after the body."

(Sangaiyuishin 三界唯心, «Shobogenzo»)

In the mechanism, you receive Love (=Tao) and emit Love.

The body is your hologram.

So is the world.

You emit Love before creating it.

You receive Love after accepting it.

Love is nothing but harmless.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 65-8 Return to Tao

Today's Tao

You return to Tao with things. (Ch.65)

There are two key functions here.

1. "Return".

The word indicates the energy cycle.

This cycle is Tao, therefore, true You.

Everything returns to Tao.

This is Big Natural Flow, that is to say, Tao's perfect integration 大順 [taijun]. (☞See Chuang Tzu's teachings 42-8)

2. "With things".

The word "things" suggests a hologram.

The key is the preposition "with".

This implies a hologram's function as a catalyst.

Your mind and body are part of your hologram along with mountains, rivers, flowers, and stars, in short, with all other elements of what you see (and you cannot see).

All of them return to the neutral state of Tao (=the state before your hologram is projected, =Bumo misho izen).

What we call "one life" is the emission and return of a hologram.

But, remember there is no time in Tao.

The moment something begins, it ends.

The moment something ends, it begins.

No life, no end of life.

不生不滅 [fusho fumetsu].

Tao Te Ching Chapter 65-7 Miracle Attainment

Today's Tao

Dark Depth Attainment is deep and far! (Ch.65)

Dark Depth Attainment is everyday life.

It is nothing magical.

That's exactly why it is deep and far.

Dark Depth, which is Tao, reaches the deepest bottom, the farthest place, and everywhere.

Every moment of life is a miracle.

Your hologram is the miracle.

Zen Master Dogen would say:

"If it is not a painted rice-cake, you cannot eat it."

(☞See Painted rice-cake / Empty granary 53-5 A painted rice-cake: 画餅 [gabyo / gabei])

If it is not a miracle, we cannot eat it.

Eating food is a miracle.

Going to the bathroom is a miracle.

Your body is a hologram and miracle.

It is the closest manifestation of Buddha's love.

That's why Dogen insists on keeping our bodies clean. (Senjo 洗浄 and Senmen 洗面, «Shobogenzo»)

Tao Te Ching Chapter 63-4 Small = Big

Today's Tao

The small is big. The few is many. (Ch.63)

Can you accept that the world is your hologram?

All right.

Then, what is the biggest thing of all?

Well, it's you logically because you are the one who projects it.

What is the second biggest?

Your brains.

What's next?

Your body.

The next?

Your room or the space around you.

The closer, the bigger.

The order in size is upside down.

So is the order in number.

Haven't you considered that your own self is the smallest?

Love the biggest being of all, which is Tao, that is to say, true You.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 57-10 Don't move

Today's Tao

"I like being still and the people correct themselves." (Ch.57)

A: "Master Bonbon, people are not 'correct' politically, morally, and financially."

B: "Stand up and do something. Correct all those evildoers!"

Master Bonbon, please stop saying things contrary to Lao Tzu's teachings.

Lao Tzu doesn't move, and people will transform themselves naturally.

Of course, yes, because the word "people" suggests your hologram.

You don't have to do anything, and your hologram (=the world) will find the best way.

"Don't move until you are forced to."

When your body doesn't move naturally, this maxim of Chuang Tzu will give you the courage not to react.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 54-9 See the body

Today's Tao

Therefore, see the body through the body. (Ch.54)

Therefore, see Tao through your body. Your magnificent body is a manifestation of Tao.

On the other hand, «Spirited Away» is an evidence how much westernized our collective psychological archetype in Japan is. Behind the traditional visual codes, we can see many western elements profoundly anchored in Japanese culture now. It is good news, right, Mr Yukio Mishima?

Tao Te Ching Chapter 54-5 Family

Today's Tao

Learn it in the family, and its attainment is abundant. (Ch.54)

Love your body and mind, first.

Then, love your friends and family.

But, don't be fooled by the words; body, mind, friends, and family.

They are all part of your hologram, not separate or independent entities.

Love your hologram.

Accept your own self and people close to you as they are.

Then, you can re-circulate Tao's energy.

The world in front of you is abundant of this fundamental energy whatever you call it.

Thousands of miles apart and in the two completely different languages, but somehow you can see the same sensitivity towards words and the intangible world. Their love to something supernatural was quite natural to them.☞In our common understandings, a Yama Uba is not supposed to be so beautiful. Of course, there is nothing wrong with being beautiful.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 54-4 Body

Today's Tao

Learn it in the body, and its attainment is true. (Ch.54)

This paragraph is a kanreisu (a bar / spring) to understand Tao and Zen.

Let's remember the mechanism of the holograms and use Reverse Thinking.

Body is bigger than Family.

Family is bigger than Village.

Village is bigger than Country.

First, love your body.

This is the best and true attainment of Tao.

Second, love your family.

The closer they are to you, the more important they are.

What they say are catalysts for you, in other words, Tao's messages.

Third, love the environment you are living in right now.

In the end, love the world in general.

Don't get annoyed by what the media tell you.

Tao answers your question!

☞The floating world, Uki-yo in Japanese, is the way they look at life. That's where geisha girls used to dwell and yakuza men were heroes. Ukiyo-e are called Japanese prints, but the word means the pictures of the floating world. Life is ephemeral. Enjoy it while you can. Tatoo, Irezumi 刺青. Or you might want to pronounce the kanji characters Shisei as novelist Junichiro Tanizaki named one of his first successful short stories. This could be a distant memory of the time when some of our ancestors lived in Southern Pacific islands.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 52-9 The light

Today's Tao

Use its light. Return to its enlightenment. Then, your body's bad luck will disappear. (Ch.52)

"Light" is Love, Tao, Buddha, Zen, Amida, Absolute, or whatever you would like to call the fundamental energy.

Through the objects you see, the acts you do, and the thoughts you bear, you receive the light.

When you receive the light, you should return it to its origin.

But how?

Well, you do nothing.

Because life itself is Satori, or enlightenment.

Don't be terrified by "Your body's bad luck".

All disasters and misfortunes are your hologram projected by you.

You are always safe because true You are Tao.

You are just in the state of being lost, Mayoi.

The disasters and misfortunes are catalysts to stimulate you to emit more love.

Remember Mayoi is not an antonym of Satori.

☞Yakuza やくざ. "Ya や" is hachi 八, which means eight in Japanese. "Ku く" nine 九. "Za ざ" indicates san 三, which is three. Eight 8, nine 9, and three 3 make twenty 20. The last digit of twenty is zero 0. In a traditional game Hana Fuda, (for which Nintendo was known before the invention of Ultra Hand by Gunpei Yokoi, the father of Super Mario Brothers), zero is the point you get when you have the cards of eight, nine and three points. Therefore, the expression "yakuza" signifies uselessness, some think.
