Tao Te Ching Chapter 81-8 Sage's Tao

Today's Tao

The sage's Tao acts and doesn't compete. (Ch.81)

Who is the sage?

Of course, you are the one.

Then, who are you?

"Eh, excuse me, sir, which are you talking about, 'true You' or 'your own self'? Self doesn't exist, right?"

That's right.

Self, life, world. They are names given to some groups of information.

They are not independent entities.

"I see. Eh, excuse me, sir. What is 'true I'?"

True You are Tao.

Tao is always "acting without competing", that is to say, projecting a hologram without directly interfering with it.

Tao, Love, Buddha, and Zen among others are names given to the fundamental energy.

"Eh, sir, it is also called nothingness 無 [mu], right?"

Exactly.

Please picture the circulation of an energy with neither time nor space.

What else can you call it but nothingness.

Time and space are parameters used to reconstruct information in "the mind".

In other words, they are names.

"If you can talk about Tao, that Tao is not Tao itself."

This very first line of Tao Te Ching is not saying that it is impossible to understand Taoism logically. No!

It is possible to comprehend Taoism logically.

It is saying that the comprehension itself is part of your hologram.

☞«Recommended Books 18» The most important function of a Japanese is making love. It doesn't matter if he is the poorest dropout living in the forests or the most revered priest of Shintoism living in the castle. He or she has got to make love. This could be a hidden heritage from our Polynesian ancestors or a genetic mission imprinted in the deepest recess of our chromosomes. Whatever it is the reason, the Japanese love to make love not only for the reproduction of the people but for pleasure. In spite of all the moral prohibitions by Confucianism and by jealous parents, Japanese girls have been successfully finding a way to enjoy making love. We used to have an institution called Geisha girls. Though it changes names and appearances, the institution never die out. A nice gift of a Gucci bag is an excuse good enough to make love with an aged stranger. Why? Because making love is sacred. Carnal desire is a manifestation of divinity. We, all the human beings, are divine. That's why we make love for pleasure. The gadgets for pleasure are offerings to the deity of joy. Please read «Kojiki», one of the oldest written records in Japanese, and «Love Songs from the Man'yoshu: Selections from a Japanese Classic», one of the oldest anthologies of Waka poems, which is a precursor of Haiku. You will see why love and desire are officially important.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 55-8 Su Dongpo / No husky voice

Today's Tao

He cries out all day long, but his voice doesn't get husky. (Ch.55)

A baby can "cry out all day long" because his energy won't be exhausted.

His hologram can keep crying because Tao is inexhaustible.

Eleventh-century Chinese poet So Toba / Su Dongpo 蘇東坡 expressed this beautifully:

無一物中無尽蔵

花あり月あり楼台あり

[Mu ichi motsu chu mu jin zo

hana ari tsuki ari rodai ari]

Nothingness has an unlimited storage.

Flowers exist. The moon exists. A tower exists.

The first line has become one of the favorite expressions among Zen Buddhists.

Please read Tao by Matsumoto 39-12 Inexhaustible valley.

The entry explains this in detail in terms of the signification of each Kanji / Chinese character.

☞Osamu Dazai and Yukio Mishima hated each other. Dazai was born in a wealthy family in the countryside. Mishima in a non-millionaire family in Tokyo. The former grew up in the countryside, dreaming of urbane sophistication. The latter in Tokyo, surrounded by the sons of zaibatsu, financially powerful families. As for patriotism, both did not serve for their country. As for the ends of their lives, both acted dramatically.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 49-1 No heart

Today's Tao

The sage always has no heart. (Ch.49)

無心 [mu shin] / no heart.

First, let's read this as "there is nothing called «heart»".

We can accept that our feelings do not belong to us and come from somewhere else.

They are part of our hologram.

Second, let's read the sentence as "nothingness is our heart".

We can accept that our feelings are manifestations of Tao.

No matter how we feel, we cherish our feelings as something sacred.

[Note]
心 [shin]: the Tao/hologram mechanism in Zen Buddhism, sometimes translated as mind or heart. It means the center. Picture the center of the Yin Yang circle. (☞See By going down 61-8) In this sense, 無心 [mu shin] can be interpreted as "no mechanism". Nothingness is the mechanism. The mechanism is nothingness. In other words, the mechanism is the manifestation of Tao.

☞Please look at the Kanji / Chinese character on the cover of Natsume Soseki's «Kokoro» on the left. Can you identify the character? It is identical to the one up at the beginning of today's entree. This Kanji character 心 is pronounced [kokoro] or [shin], depending on the context. The confusing thing is that the Kanji 心 [kokoro / shin] is translated as "heart" or "mind" in English, depending on the convenience of the translator. Mercy 38-4, No form 40-17, One's birth 42-1 also have little articles on Natsume Soseki's «Kokoro».

Tao Te Ching Chapter 39-12 Inexhaustible valley

Today's Tao

If the valley were not filled, it might be exhausted. (Ch.39)

"The valley" means void.

So, Lao Tzu wants to say:

"void is filled and inexhaustible".

In Zen Buddhism, they say:

"無一物中無尽蔵 [mu ichi motsu chu mu jin zo]"

no / one / thing / inside / no / limit / storage

Each Kanji / Chinese character has the signification in this order.

It can be translated as:

"nothingness has an unlimited storage."

Sometimes, I wonder.

All the computer jargons and the internet technology may exist as a metaphor in order to explain us how Tao works.

It is just like Ikkyu's «Yama Uba» play, which tells us how Zen functions.

-Visit Asakusa. If Akihabara is the dream of the 21st century Japan, Asakusa is that of the 19th century. Takeshi Kitano started his career as a stand-up comedian. Spend at least a full day, hanging around in the sector behind the Sensoji temple from the river Sumida. You can see the glimpse of Asakusa of Yasunari Kawabata and Kafu Nagai.
