«My Koan Horoscope»

(available in Taoísmo en Español)

1. Our side dare not advance one inch, but retreat one foot. (Ch.69 / Good luck)

2. Though something is done, he does not rely on it. (Ch.2 / Bad luck)

3. Once up on a time, somebody attained One. (Ch.39 / Little luck)

«Interpretation»

Good luck - Bad luck - Little luck. Do you wonder whether you should advance or retreat? Do you wonder if you will start a new relationship with someone or not? Do you wonder if you will end this relationship with an unfaithful partner and leave him? Do you wonder if an emotional night between a man and a woman is good enough to begin a new life? Do you wonder if a physical intercourse is the beginning of a spiritual intercourse? Do you feel sick and tired of a game of give-and-take between a couple? Lao Tzu don't like advancing. He prefers retreating. Even after a perfect night between a man and a woman is completed, Lao Tzu asks the couple not to rely on the relationship. Once upon a time, Taoism was pure and simple. Now, it is tarnished with adorned expressions that confuse us. They were thought tools at the beginning. They are called Hoben 方便 in Zen Buddhism. Then, they started running wild, insisting their own philosophical independence from Lao Tzu's teachings. It is like a stranded relationship where a man and a woman fool around but never be able to abandon it. Zen Master Dogen shows us a solution in Butsukojoji 仏向上事 chapter of his Shobogenzo 正法眼蔵:

"What we call Hoben is every Buddha, every ancestor."

方便といふは、諸仏なり、諸祖なり。

What does this mean? Your life, including love life, is the holographic manifestation of Buddha's Love. Why does it appear? Because it is a thought tool or a tool to teach Buddhism. What is the teachings of Buddhism? It doesn't matter if it is Taoism, Buddhism, Shintoism, or whatever. Life, of course including love life, teaches us how the mechanism between Love and Hologram functions. How does it work? Life (=Hologram) stimulates you. You emit Tao/Love/Buddha. (Plus, please don't forget that true You are Tao itself.) Now you know why you live through love.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 77-2 Suppress doubt?

Today's Tao

It suppresses a high one. (Ch.77)

Why do we doubt?

Why does doubt come into your hologram?

Because Tao suppresses "a high one".

As we discussed at Hoben gate / Soft and Weak 76-10, a soft, weak, and high thing means a hologram.

Tao suppresses the hologram.

It is part of Tao's cycle.

Something high has to come down.

Something low has to go up. (☞See Strong steroid 30-11)

This is what "bending a bow" suggests. (☞See Bend a bow 77-1)

A hologram reflects the characteristics of the cycle.

First, Tao gives us doubt.

Like the other elements in a hologram, doubt is Love in disguise.

Second, we clear the doubt and discover Love.

Third, we give thanks to the hologram while sending Love.

The sequence of your holograms, or your life, is what Zen Buddhists call "Koan 公案".

Tao Te Ching Chapter 76-10 Hoben gate / Soft & Weak

Today's Tao

The soft and weak stays high. (Ch.76)

"The soft and weak" thing is a hologram, which stays high, that is to say, at the superficial level.

If you want to mature spiritually, what do you have to do?

Meditate for thirty years?

No.

You can mature right now right here.

All you have to do is to open the gate of Dark Depth Female. (☞See The root of heaven and earth 6-3 and Tao Te Ching Chapter 6 Valley God)

It is also called "the gate of various surprises" (☞See Reverse Thinking 1-9 and Tao Te Ching Chapter 1 Gateway to Tao)

and

"Heaven's gate" (☞See Tao Te Ching Chapter 10 Magic words).

In Buddhism, Buddha calls it "the gate of Hoben 方便門",

which means "the gate of Buddha's tool to enlighten people".

(Shohojisso 諸法実相, «Shobogenzo»)

How can you open the gate?

It is easy.

You have only to accept the world in front of you (=your hologram).

Then, what do you see after it opens itself?

Exactly the same scenery.

But do you see the difference?

Tao Te Ching Chapter 61-6 Under small

Today's Tao

Therefore, a big country takes a small country by going under the small country. (Ch.61)

Please don't be fooled by the words "big" and "small".

Likewise, please don't be fooled by the words "Yin" and "Yang".

They are just Hoben, tools to explain metaphysical concepts.

They are like Satori and Mayoi, or being lost.

These pairs are, in fact, the same thing.

No combination of antonyms is important.

The important thing is that you discover they are one.

That's why Zen masters just draw a circle.

☞Small = Big. This is one of the concepts that may interest many architects and interior designers. It is also an idea that you have to live with and utilize if you live in a small house in Tokyo. You can find many useful tips in «Small Spaces». In «Super Potato Design», there are many photos of Takashi Sugimoto's works. The book has an introduction by Tadao Ando.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 39-1 Attain One

Today's Tao

Once upon a time, somebody attained One. (Ch.39)

One signifies Tao.

"Once upon a time, somebody attained Tao."

Masters in the olden days used such an expression as this.

A little too often, I suppose.

It is called Hoben 方便 in Zen Buddhism.

It means a tool to explain about a highly metaphysical concept.

I don't want to blame old masters, but it is clear that their Hoben the thought tools have created many misunderstandings among latter-day seekers of the truth.

All right, let's go straight to Today's point.

It is you who attained Tao.

In fact, you didn't even attain it because you didn't need to. You are Tao.

-Renzaburo Shibata is a good novelist. Although he is very well-known in Japan, his name is hardly mentioned in the international literary circles. He is a comercial writer. That's for sure. But it doesn't deny that his works are a reflection of Japanese society and a manifestation of its collective psyche. Besides, he was a bun-shi, a literature samurai, who adored gambling like pachinko.
