Today's Tao

Make the people respect life, and don't let them travel far. (Ch.80)


Don't try to experience a so-called "altered state".

Don't try to reach Satori the enlightenment.

Don't "travel" for it.

Respect your life.

It is a precious hologram, which is the question and the answer at the same time.

It is Koan and Satori simultaneously.

Though the hologram is an illusion, it is the only "tangible" medium through which you can receive Tao's energy.

Your own self is part of the hologram.

So is the world.

The hologram receives the energy through itself.

This is the Tao/hologram mechanism, Shin 心.

Your nirvana / nirvāṇa / Nehan 涅槃 is right here right now.

Don't try to look for it somewhere else.

If you carve wood on behalf of Big's carpenter, you surely hurt your hand. (Ch.74)


Don't try to carve "an uncarved block".

That is to say, don't try to control Tao and its holograms.

Let the carpenter of the holograms do his work.

In Zen Buddhism, they wisely call them Inmo butsu 恁麼物, or "what on earth" thing. (☞See Inmo and No mind 49-10)

Let your hologram come and go.

Surely you will hurt your hand if you try to control something uncontrollable.

You will feel you are stuck in the world because you forget that this life is your hologram.

If you cannot help feeling that you are lost in Mayoi, don't worry.

This Mayoi, or being lost, is Satori itself.

Your life itself is Satori the enlightenment.

Dear Tao friends,

Thank you for your patience, and let's resume our journey of Taoism.

Now we are reading the final chapters of Tao Te Ching, and let's cherish every bit of them.

One sentence a day (without Saturdays and Sundays) as if we were finishing the final pieces of chocolate.

If you end life on behalf of those who are in charge of ending life, it is like carving wood on behalf of Big's carpenter. (Ch.74)


"Big's carpenter" means Tao's carpenter. (☞See Big 25-9)

Tao is not supposed to be carved. It is an uncarved block. (☞See Thick 15-8 and Uncarved block 28-12)

Would you like to be a carpenter to carve Tao? In other words, would you like to intervene the natural course of Tao by trying to influence your holographic "life"?


We have precious pieces of advice by Zen Master Dogen if we want to detach ourselves from life.

"If you have Buddha between the beginning of life and the end of it, there is neither the beginning of life nor the end of it."

"If you don't have Buddha between the beginning of life and the end of it, you will not be lost between the beginning of life and the end of it."

「生死の中に仏あれば生死なし」

「生死の中に仏なければ生死にまどはず」

(Shoji 生死, «Shobogenzo»)


Get lost in life.

Lost completely.

Being lost in Mayoi is Satori.

You will find Buddha's love while lost in the life of Mayoi.

But, if it is too painful for you, remember that your life is just a hologram and catalyst.

Therefore, he leaves that and takes this. (Ch.72)


First in Chapter 12, then in Chapter 38, and now this is the third time Lao Tzu asks us to leave "that" and take "this". (☞See Not that one, but this one 12-7 and Leave it 38-15)

Then, what are "this" and "that"?

"This" is Tao, which is true You.

And "that" is your hologram, which is the world in front of you, including your own self.

"Leave your hologram and take Tao."

That's what Lao Tzu is saying here.

Watch out. This could be your pitfall.

"Uh, h… The world is my hologram, and Lao Tzu is asking me to leave the hologram. I know how to do it. I meditate. While meditating I can leave this reality and go into an altered state. This is Satori, right?"

Wrong!

Satori is not an act of looking for a refuge.

Take this reality as a catalyst and cherish "right now right here".

Emit Love and turn the wheel of manifestation (=転法輪 [tenborin]).

Learn: "this = that"!

This is Satori.

B: "Idiot! Of course, you have to go through plenty of difficulties and adversities before you buy Satori. But, you know, there is a shortcut. The price is negotiable."


No one has to go through difficulties before he gets what he wants.

As you know all you have to know, you have got all you have to have.

Trust the world you project (=your hologram).

"The sage" means you.

You have no difficulty unless you think it is difficult.

That's why Lao Tzu tells us:

"Do not judge".

Have you ever tried to explain to others how Tao works?

Did they comprehend it?

Even if they didn't, don't get disappointed.

No one in your hologram (="the world under the sky") comprehends it.

Why don't you think that they are actors projected in your mind?

What they say is an echo of your mind, so to speak.

So, if you doubt Tao, they doubt it, too.

But remember?

Your mind itself is part of the hologram.

It doesn't matter if you have doubts or not.

The important thing is that you practice Tao, in other words, you receive and send Love.

This is Satori.

The actors in the hologram cannot do it.

Only you can do it.

If you don't compete, you will never be beaten.


Lao Tzu says:

"Simply, he doesn't compete. That's why no one under the sky can compete with him." (Ch.22)


This is the essence of Aiki-do 合気道, or Tao of synchronized energy. (☞See Aikido 22-12 and Don't compete 66-7)

The so-called enemy is part of your hologram along with your own self.

So, it is useless to compete.

A true warrior doesn't get angry. (Ch.68)


A true samurai might say:

"If you are angry, you are already defeated".


A true Taoist might say:

"If you are angry, you don't know anything about Tao".


What do you have to say, then?


You in the sense of your own self projected in the hologram would say:

"I am angry because the world is full of injustice."

or

"Oh, my god. Oh, my god. I am angry but I am not supposed to be angry. I am supposed to suppress my feelings. Oh, my god. Oh, my god. I am gonna lose my Satori".


But you in the sense of true You, which is Tao, should say:

"I accept my anger. I even cherish the anger because it is part of my adorable hologram".

☞A woman can be a samurai warrior or a yakuza swordsman. A legendary Japanese actress / singer Meiko Kaji 梶芽衣子 takes a katana sword to fight. «Blind Woman's Curse» is titled «Kaidan Nobori-ryu 怪談昇り竜» in Japanese. In the samurai period, Japanese women did not have a nice chest protector like the one from Mizuno.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 64-11 Stick & Lose

If you stick to it, you will lose it. (Ch.64)


Like yesterday's sentence, you can find the identical one in Chapter 29. (☞See If you stick to it 29-4)

When you stick to something, you are refusing change.

When you block the change, you lose Tao's energy.

Obsession is the shortcut to loss.

Especially the obsession to the concept of Self.


Zen Master Dogen kindly cautions:

"Those who are lost in Mayoi stick to (Self);

those who get Satori leave (Self)."

迷う者は之に執し、悟る者は之を離れる。

"Oh, my god. I've got my own self. I cannot leave it. My god. What can I do?"

Please do not panic.

Being lost in Mayoi is part of Satori.

☞Morihei Ueshiba (1883 - 1969) was a Japanese martial artist. An Aikido master. Takeda Sokaku was his teacher. Later he worked with a Japanese religious leader, Onisaburo Deguchi, to found a utopian colony in Mongolia. ☞Shinran (1173 -1263) is the founder of Jodo Shin shu / Pure Land Shin school. Zen Master Dogen lived in Kyoto while Shinran was there although there is no record that proves the two ran across each other. Shinran's master was Honen. Yuien, one of Shinran's disciples, is supposed to be the author of «Tannisho».

Do it before it has come to exist. (Ch.64)


華開世界起

[kekai sekaiki].

That's what they say in Zen Buddhism.

It means:

"A flower opens. The world gets up".


A flower symbolizes a hologram.

A hologram opens up and the world comes to exist there.

This is a so-called "reality" that is reconstructed in our "mind" as a catalyst.


Buddha said:

"It is like a man with bleary-eyed vision seeing the flowers in the middle of emptiness."

亦如翳人見空中華

（Shuryogon Sutra Book 4 首楞厳経　第四巻 ☞See also Wild field 53-4）


But, watch out.


Zen Master Dogen cautions.

We must not ignorantly interpret it as: "Since we are lost, we see illusions in the air".

In Buddhism, "a man with bleary-eyed vision" means a man of Satori.

Let's decode Today's Tao sentence.

Send love "before" your projected hologram "comes to exist" in the world, asking you to send more love.

Godzilla left his body in Tokyo Bay. The bureaucrat left a small park for children. It is easy to maintain something stable. (Ch.64)


A: "Master Bonbon, I don't wanna work hard. I am lazy, you know? Show me the easiest way to get enlightenment."

B: "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch. After years and years of painful effort, only a few chosen ones will be able to get Satori."


C'mon, Master Bonbon, stop saying these ridiculous things.

Lao Tzu says it here as clearly as day.

It's easy.

Let's decode Today's Tao sentence.

What is "something stable"?

The most stable thing is the fundamental energy, which we call Tao.

Some call it Love; others, Zen or Buddha.

Whatever the name is, Lao Tzu is saying that it is easy to keep it.

In other words, it is easy to be one with Tao.

Because true You are Tao from the beginning without effort or superhuman austerities.

Therefore, some take it by going down. Others go down and take it. (Ch.61)


Going down is being passive, or receiving Tao's energy through your hologram without resistance.

Some do it on purpose.

Others do it without being aware of it.

The key thing is to know that everyone does it.

This act of sending and receiving Love (=Tao) is Satori.


Zen Master Dogen encourages us by saying:

"Some learn Tao by letting go the mechanism of Tao and the hologram (=your mind, =the world).

Others learn Tao by tackling the mechanism of Tao and the hologram."

これらの心を放下して学道するあり拈挙（ねんこ）して学道するあり

(Shinjingakudo 身心学道, «Shobogenzo»)


Whether you are conscious of it or not, you are in the state of Satori; you are one with Tao.

心 [shin]: the Tao/hologram mechanism in Zen Buddhism, sometimes translated as mind or heart. It means the center. Picture the center of the Yin Yang circle. Tao manifests (=projects) itself as a hologram. The hologram stimulates Tao. This is the cycle of the mechanism. (☞See also No heart 49-1)

Please don't be fooled by the words "big" and "small".

Likewise, please don't be fooled by the words "Yin" and "Yang".

They are just Hoben, tools to explain metaphysical concepts.

They are like Satori and Mayoi, or being lost.

These pairs are, in fact, the same thing.

No combination of antonyms is important.

The important thing is that you discover they are one.

That's why Zen masters just draw a circle.

Zen Master Dogen says:

授記なんぞ大悟大迷ならざらん。

[juki nanzo daigo daimei narazaran]

"How can Juki not be Big Satori and Big Mayoi!"

Satori is part of your hologram.

Mayoi, or being lost, is part of the hologram.

Your own Self is part of the hologram.

The intercourse between Tao and the hologram is part of the hologram itself.

Contradictory as it may sound, Tao is this intercourse.

Tao is the act of receiving and sending Love, which is Tao.

☞We have a few national treasures in Japan. Some are official, and others are the ones that we adore but feel too ashamed to admit it. Some Buddha statues and Zen drawings are the former, and Geisha and robots are the latter. At the deepest recess of a Japanese male's heart, he always have a little room for idolized femininity and mechanized animism. They have even mixed the two entities together and ended up inventing «Robo-geisha».

Tao Te Ching Chapter 61-1 Satori = Reality

A big country is the lower reaches of the river. (Ch.61)


"A big country" here means "to be one with Tao".

"But, wait a minute! You said: 'A country' means one's hologram, didn't you?", you might want to ask me.

Yes, I did.

Being in the hologram is being one with Tao, or being in the state of Satori.

"What? It means that the hologram, the so-called reality, or the world in front of us is Satori, doesn't it?"

Yes, it does.

Living in this world is the Satori.

Many people say some teachings of Taoism and Zen Buddhism are contradictory and incomprehensible.

Why?

Because of this.

They don't want to accept that this very reality is the state of Satori.

It is not something you obtain after long painful hard work.

At "the lower reaches of " a river, which means your hologram, your life, or this world, you are one with Tao.

☞Exploring Japanese literature is never easy. The cultural gap used to be insurmountable between where you are and where geisha and samurai lived.
