Tao Te Ching Chapter 80-12 Moonlight & Dewdrops / Dogs & Roosters

Today's Tao

People in one country can hear the voices of dogs and roosters in another country. (Ch.80)

What is the relation between your hologram and those of other people?

How do yours and theirs interact?

Today's Tao sentence is the answer to the question.

"People in one country" signifies your hologram.

"The voices of dogs and cocks in another country" suggests another hologram.

Firstly, you think that others exist independently, but they are part of your hologram.

They are 他己 [tako], your own self beyond your control, that is to say, the extended part of yourself (=non-you).

Secondly, you think that your own self exists, but it is also part of your hologram.

The self doesn't exist. It is a name given to some collective information. (☞See Tao Te Ching / Chapter 33 / Self and Tao Te Ching / Chapter 7 / No Self)

Then, a question arises.

Who in the world is projecting the hologram?

Tao is.

It is true You.

Zen Buddhists cherish the beautiful metaphor of the dewdrops reflecting the moonlight.

The moonlight is Tao.

The image of the moon on the dewdrops is your hologram.

The light is called 無碍光 [mugeko], the light without obstacles.

How many dewdrops or holograms are there in the world?

The answer is one.

You and non-you are the same manifestation of Tao.

Let's overcome the trap of individuality.

Lao Tzu answers your question!

«Recommended Books 9» "Which country do you like the most?" USA? Mexico? Spain? China? France? Argentin? Or Japan? The answer is: "Snow country". «Snow Country» is unarguably the best novel written by Yasunari Kawabata. Probably, the most popular Japanese novel in the last one hundred years. "Be like Komako" is the novelist's answer to Lao Tzu's "Be like water". When you face a difficult situation and don't know what to do, check «Snow Country» and make decisions as if you were Komako the Geisha. Water is a little too abstract. Komako is a woman and artist of life. If you are interested in Kawabata's literature but do not have enough time to read all his works, «Palm-of-the-Hand Stories» are strongly recommended. They are shorter than most ordinary short stories. There are plenty of them in the book. Therefore, it is ideal to read the book in the bed before you fall asleep.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 80-8 Face transmission / Menju / Beauty

Today's Tao

Make them appreciate the beauty of their clothes. (Ch.80)

The face is the place where the contact between Tao and a hologram takes place.

Zen Master Dogen puts it this way:

"Face-giving [Menju 面授/ Face (to face) transmission] is receiving and giving at the face."

面授は面処の受授なり

(Menju 面授, «Shobogenzo 正法眼蔵»)

Your face is the interface between Tao and a hologram.

That's why you cannot see the face.

You can see only an interpretation of it, such as your reflection on the mirror or the reputation.

Since it is the important interface, let's keep it clean.

Therefore, Dogen painstakingly explains how to wash the face and other body parts. (Senjo 洗浄, Senmen 洗面; «Shobogenzo 正法眼蔵»)

Your body is a manifestation of Tao (=Love, =Buddha).

By washing it, you can emit Love (=Tao, =Buddha).

That's one basic way to keep Tao's energy circulating.

Your clothes are an extension of your face.

Forget someone else's criteria.

Please appreciate your beautiful clothes, your beautiful body, and your beautiful face.

[Note]
The titles of the two chapters in Shobogenzo above, that is to say, Japanese words "Senjo 洗浄" and "Senmen 洗面", signify "wash" and "washing the face" respectively.

Lao Tzu answers your question!

«Recommended Books 5» When you travel in an unknown territory, you might be happy to have a guide. If he is good, your journey will be safe and fun. The best Japanese guide to Zen in English is, without question, Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki. It is a pity that this learned scholar did not translate Dogen's «Shobogenzo» into English. He may have had thousands of reasons not to do it, and his decision was wise. Still, many Zen learners in the non-Japanese speaking world cannot help imagining how enormous his contribution to the humanity would be if he had done it. This excellent guide with a hearty sense of humor wrote a summary of Zen Master Ikkyu's play «Yama Uba» in his «Zen and Japanese Culture». Ikkyu, who would be a cynic poet dressed in a John Galliano dress if he lived now, wrote the play in order to tell how Zen functions. Tao Te Ching Chapter 80-6 Tie the rope

Today's Tao

Make the people tie their rope again and use it. (Ch.80)

A long, long time ago, even before the days of Lao Tzu, people used to "tie their rope" and make knots to record things.

It was a prehistoric counterpart to our contract.

They didn't need alphabets or characters to write contracts.

The tied ropes were good enough to even govern a state.

They were innocent enough to believe that all the promises would be granted and honest enough to respect them.

Lao Tzu asks us to return to those days.

To the days when they did not segregate the self from the non-self, the self under the control from the self beyond the control.

Remember?

A person who makes a promise is an extended part of your own self.

We don't even need a rope to tie, in fact.

You should trust all without doubt because everything is you.

Tao answers your question!

«Recommended Books 3» Please do not try to understand Tao and Zen scientifically. In science, you are still obliged to believe that there is the one and only objective world. It is no use trying to interpret Tao according to the scientific rules. Nevertheless, as everything is a catalyst or a teacher, science can stimulate and teach us a lot. Particularly, quantum physics and Karl Pribram's holonomic brain model are worth knowing. You can find plenty of information on them in Lynne McTaggart's «The Field: The Quest for the Secret Force of the Universe». To understand the Tao/Hologram mechanism - Shin 心, Swiss economist Rene Egli's «The LOL2A-Principle, or The Perfectness of the World» can be a good preparatory read although the author does not use the word Shin 心. The mechanism of energy and resistance is clearly explained in terms of economy. At the beginning of each chapter, he quotes a corresponding passage from Hermann Hesse's «Siddhartha».

Tao Te Ching Chapter 80-3 Don't travel

Today's Tao

Make the people respect life, and don't let them travel far. (Ch.80)

Don't try to experience a so-called "altered state".

Don't try to reach Satori the enlightenment.

Don't "travel" for it.

Respect your life.

It is a precious hologram, which is the question and the answer at the same time.

It is Koan and Satori simultaneously.

Though the hologram is an illusion, it is the only "tangible" medium through which you can receive Tao's energy.

Your own self is part of the hologram.

So is the world.

The hologram receives the energy through itself.

This is the Tao/hologram mechanism, Shin 心.

Your nirvana / nirvāṇa / Nehan 涅槃 is right here right now.

Don't try to look for it somewhere else.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 80-1 Small country

Today's Tao

Be a small country and have few people. (Ch.80)

Look around.

You see just a small space, right?

"Small" is wonderful.

Can you really see a "big" country with your own eyes?

You can "see" it on TV, or something.

Do you have many people around you?

No?

That's excellent.

Don't be fooled by numbers, especially the numbers of people reported in a newspaper or on Internet. (☞See Tao by Matsumoto / No numbers)

Please remember that the words "country" and "people" signify your hologram.

Love your "small country".

Cherish people around you.

The beings closer to you appear in your hologram more often than the rest of the world.

Instead of worrying about the miseries brought to us by the media, why don't we begin with accepting the people and things in front of us as they are?

Be small and have few because "small" is bigger than "big" and "few" is more than "plenty". (☞See Small = Big 63-4)

Tao Te Ching Chapter 79-4 No favoritism

Today's Tao

Heaven's Tao has no favoritism. It is always on the side of a good person. (Ch.79)

"Heaven" means your hologram as the word "sky" does.

So, Heaven's Tao signifies Tao's energy inside all the beings in the hologram.

In other words, it is Hossho 法性, the nature of manifestation. (☞See Hossho stays low 76-9)

Tao does not judge.

It seems that the limited capacity of human beings judge.

Tao's energy inside your hologram has no favoritism.

There is neither good nor bad in Tao.

Then, what does "a good person" mean?

"A good person" means you.

True You are Tao.

Therefore, only you can sustain the Tao/hologram mechanism, Shin 心.

Japanese philosopher Kitaro Nishida 西田幾多郎 (1870 - 1945) says:

"Practically speaking, we have only one true Good, which is to find out the true Self. That's all."

(translated by Naoto Matsumoto; Book III, Chapter 13, The Perfect Good Action, «A Study of the Good 善の研究» ☞See A study of the Good 49-3 and Goodness 49-5)

[Note]
What is the true Self?
"It is the true body of the cosmos", Nishida answers. (Ditto)
The true body of the cosmos is the Tao/hologram mechanism, Shin 心.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 78-6 Everyone = You

Today's Tao

Everyone in the world under the sky knows them. (Ch.78)

Why do I ask you not to resist?

Why do I ask you not to resist even the desire of resistance.

Because I want you to understand everyone is "you".

What Lao Tzu teaches us here is the same.

Everyone knows everything because everything is one.

All the beings, including people, animals, other living (and non-living) beings, and even your own thoughts and feelings, are one.

Since everything is one, everyone knows all, and "you" know all, too.

"You" are the one who projects all.

So, why do you have to hide something from someone?

Why do you have to fight for the disclosure of information?

Well, but if you cannot help it, don't resist the temptation to fight for or against something.

Just remember knowledge is shared by all.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 77-12 Secret of superiority

Today's Tao

He doesn't want to show off his superiority. (Ch.77)

A: "Master Bonbon, I am better than others, right? I've just sent 1,000 holographic video game consoles to poor children in Japan."

B: "Shut up, idiot! Cash is always better than toys. If you had donated the same amount of cash to our organization, you could have been a 'chosen disciple of the week' instead of a generous idiot!"

Tell me honestly.

Would you like to be a mystic Taoist superior to the rest of the population?

Or, would you like to be a "chosen" Zen disciple selected by a mighty master?

If so, I'm afraid to tell you: "No, you cannot!".

Why?

Because everything is one.

It is impossible to distinguish one from another.

So, how can you be better than others!

Tao Te Ching Chapter 76-7 Strong army, no win

Today's Tao

Hence, if your army is strong, you will never win. (Ch.76)

If your army is "strong", is it easier to accept other people's acts against your will?

Don't you want to use your "strong army" to control the people against you?

That's why Lao Tzu says:

"you will never win".

Zen Buddhists use two key concepts to understand it.

1. 即心是仏。[soku shin ze butsu] The very mechanism is Buddha (=Tao).

2. 一切法一心。[issai ho isshin] All the manifestations are one mechanism.

Therefore, treat the so-called reality, which is a manifestation of Tao, as if it is the real Tao (while knowing that the manifestation and Tao are not exactly the same).

半箇衆生半箇法性。・・・。法性不是衆生。

(法性 Hossho, «Shobogenzo»)

It is not your ego who controls the situation.

Don't be strong.

Your true victory is to keep Tao's mechanism working.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 76-6 Soft and weak men

Today's Tao

Those who are soft and weak are men of life. (Ch.76)

No matter how hard and strong the person is, he is part of your hologram.

Then, who are you if you are soft and weak?

If you are soft and weak, you are man of life, Lao Tzu says.

Life?

What is true life?

Why do we live?

Your true life is the circulation of energy.

You are the infinite light with other names, including Tao, Buddha, Zen, and Love.

You live in order to sustain this circulation of the energy.

You live in order to sustain your true life.

Your so-called "life" is a film that stimulates the circulation.

Be soft and weak, and your light will go through the life of ego more easily.

Soften your personal and egotistic light, and your true light will light up the world.

The softer your personal light of ego is, the stronger your true light will be.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 76-5 Mujoseppo = non-living preach / Hard & Strong

Today's Tao

Therefore, those who are hard and strong are men of non-life. (Ch.76)

無情還解説法否

Do non-living objects understand what one preaches?

In Zen Buddhism, they discuss the question often.

They also ask themselves a question:

"What kind of people can hear the preaching of non-living beings?".

無情説法什麼人得聞

(cf. the preaching of non-living beings = Mujoseppo 無情説法)

The answers are quite clear:

"Yes, non-living beings can hear the preaching of non-living beings".

Life is part of a hologram, which we call the world.

A hologram is projected.

As both people and buildings in a movie are projected, living beings and non-living beings in your hologram are projected.

Living and non-living beings are the same.

In a sense, everything is non-living.

How can you tell that people and animals have got thoughts and feelings while rocks and clouds haven't?

Now you know why you are not able to hear what other people and animals think or feel.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 75-3 Plenty of life?

Today's Tao

People think lightly of ending life because they demand plenty of life. That's why they think lightly of ending life. (Ch.75)

Life is just a hologram. It is just a painted rice-cake.

It exists as a catalyst to stimulate you to emit more Love (=Tao).

To satisfy your hunger for life, all you can do is to send more Love.

Or rather, we have to learn that, whatever we do, we are always sending Love.

That's why Tozan Ryokai 洞山良价 [Tung-shan Liang-chieh / Dongshan Liangjie] said:

"I am always doing this desperately."

(聯燈會要 [rento eyo] Book 20 / Dogen quoted this in his «Shobogenzo» as shown yesterday)

If everyone is sending Love, "No one can ever do anything evil. Everyone is doing the right thing", right?

"A painted rice-cake / Gabyo 画餅", a hologram, or life is a catalyst.

It is you who satisfy your hunger by sending Love.

Whether you still want a life of plenty or plenty of life, your life is asking you to do the same thing.

Send Love.

Respect your life, or your sweet piece of painted rice-cake.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 75-2 King & Zen Master Dogen

Today's Tao

It's difficult to govern people because their king does something. That's why it's difficult to govern them. (Ch.75)

Zen Master Kyogen Chikan 香厳智閑 [Hsing-yen Chih-hsien / Xiangyan Zhixian] said:

"a painted rice-cake cannot satisfy hunger."

Of course, not. We cannot eat the picture of a rice-cake... Wait a minute!

Master Dogen said:

"If it is not a painted rice-cake, it must not be a remedy to satisfy hunger."

(Gabyo 画餅, «Shobogenzo»)

Didn't he? (☞See Painted rice-cake / Empty granary 53-5)

Can a painted rice-cake satisfy hunger?

Or, can it not?

Dogen answers the question with some key phrases in Zen.

"A painted rice-cake cannot satisfy hunger" is like saying:

"No one can ever do anything evil. Everyone is doing the right thing. (Don't do anything evil. Practice all the good things.) 諸悪莫作、衆善奉行 [shoaku makusa, shuzen bugyo]",

"Where on earth did this «what on earth» thing come from? 是什麼物恁麼来 [ze inmo butsu inmo rai]",

and

"I am always doing this desperately. 吾れ常に是に於いて切なり [ware tsuneni koreni oite setsu nari]".

(Gabyo 画餅, «Shobogenzo»)

Did you get Master Dogen's teachings?

You are the king in your hologram.

If you do something, everything is difficult.

If you do nothing, everything is easy.

[Note]
"I am always doing this desperately." 吾れ常に是に於いて切なり / 吾常於此切 [ware tsuneni koreni oite setsu nari], originally mentioned by Tozan Ryokai (807-869) 洞山良价 [Tung-shan Liang-chieh / Dongshan Liangjie].

Tao Te Ching Chapter 75-1 Tax & Starve

Today's Tao

People starve because their king taxes them too much. That's why they starve. (Ch.75)

A: "Right on, Lao Tzu! People are starving because the king taxes us too much! You, too, Master Bonbon. You are asking us too much money. We've got no money left! We've got no bread to eat!"

B: "Don't ask a religious organization to feed you. You, people, are the ones who feed us. Besides, if you don't have bread, eat pancakes or French brioche."

Neither pancakes nor brioche will satisfy their hunger.

Zen Master Dogen would give them the pictures of «a painted rice-cake / Gabyo 画餅».

"If it is not a painted rice-cake, it must not be a remedy to satisfy hunger."

(Gabyo 画餅, «Shobogenzo»)

That is to say, if it is not a hologram, it cannot be a catalyst to stimulate you.

It is just asking you to send more Love.

So are taxes and starvation.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 74-3 Fear of End

Today's Tao

If people are always afraid of the end of life, I can arrest those who do something strange and end their life. Who dares? (Ch.74)

Don't be fooled by strange stories.

"After the decomposition of your body, your soul goes to the sea of eternity."

Has anyone told you something like that?

Watch out!

Those who say something strange as this are worth being arrested, Lao Tzu insists.

Zen Master Dogen repeatedly cautions us:

"We must not think that our individual spirit goes somewhere after life.

There is no such thing as the sea of eternity."

(Soku shin ze butsu 即心是仏 and Bendowa 弁道話, «Shobogenzo». ☞See also The body decomposes 16-17)

There is no such a thing as an individual spirit.

Life is like a stack of cards.

Holograms are the cards and life is a stack of them, we can think.

Life does not exist as a being.

It is a name for the combination of holograms.

If life doesn't exist, no one can scare us, telling the end of it.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 74-2 Don't terrify them

Today's Tao

How can you terrify them by ending their life? (Ch.74)

Reincarnation is the creation and re-creation of a hologram.

It is not the story of a child in an exotic country who speaks about his former life in the language of the exotic country, not in the language he was supposed to be using while living the former life.

Tao is the exchange of the energy.

Every time the exchange takes place, Tao creates a hologram as a catalyst.

The end of life is the end of one cycle of this process.

Another one begins simultaneously.

Life is a catalyst, that is to say, an illusion.

That's why they say in Zen Buddhism:

"不生 不滅

[fusho fumetsu]

No life. No end of life".

Do we have to be afraid of the end of a holographic catalyst?

People in the world are not terrified at all by the end of a hologram/life, Lao Tzu says.

Of course not because they are just holographic characters in your catalytic movie.
