Tao Te Ching Chapter 80-11 Neighbors

Today's Tao

Neighbouring countries can see each other. (Ch.80)

What are "neighboring countries"?

They are you and the others, not just the other people, but all the other beings, both living and non-living.

You and the others "can see each other".

It means that you project the others and the others define you.

In a way, the others are a reflection of who you are.

You hear an echo of what you think.

What is "you"?

It is your holographic "self" under your control, 自己 [jiko].

What is "the others"?

It is your holographic "self" beyond your control, 他己 [tako].

But, remember true You are Tao.

The so-called "self" is just a part of information you project.

In other words, the "self" doesn't exist.

That's why they say "無我 [mu ga] / No Self" in Zen Buddhism.

無 [mu] - nothing.

我 [ga] - self.

Nothingness is your true Self.

Lao Tzu answers your question!

«Recommended Books 8» In modern Occidental literature, you have Hermann Hesse and Fyodor Dostoyevsky among others to rely on when you are lost in the wilderness of Oriental spirituality. How about local guides who can show you the way in a language and an approach that you can comprehend? The first Japanese guide is Hiroyuki Itsuki. His «Tariki» is an ideal guidebook of Jodo Pure Land Buddhism to those who prefer teachings based on historical references. The word «Ta 他» of «Tariki 他力 / Other-power» is the same «Ta 他» of «Tako 他己 / Other-self» above. Hiroyuki Itsuki asks himself why Buddha (=Other-power) made him, as a child, go through the atrocities during World War 2. The second guide is Shusaku Endo. His «Deep River» stands at the crossroads between Christianity and Oriental religions. This Japanese Catholic novelist kept on asking one question: "why God doesn't help me when I need his help?". The author doesn't mention either the word Zen nor Tao, but his concept of Deep River that goes through everything is fit nicely into Taoism and Buddhism.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 80-1 Small country

Today's Tao

Be a small country and have few people. (Ch.80)

Look around.

You see just a small space, right?

"Small" is wonderful.

Can you really see a "big" country with your own eyes?

You can "see" it on TV, or something.

Do you have many people around you?

No?

That's excellent.

Don't be fooled by numbers, especially the numbers of people reported in a newspaper or on Internet. (☞See Tao by Matsumoto / No numbers)

Please remember that the words "country" and "people" signify your hologram.

Love your "small country".

Cherish people around you.

The beings closer to you appear in your hologram more often than the rest of the world.

Instead of worrying about the miseries brought to us by the media, why don't we begin with accepting the people and things in front of us as they are?

Be small and have few because "small" is bigger than "big" and "few" is more than "plenty". (☞See Small = Big 63-4)

Tao Te Ching Chapter 79-4 No favoritism

Today's Tao

Heaven's Tao has no favoritism. It is always on the side of a good person. (Ch.79)

"Heaven" means your hologram as the word "sky" does.

So, Heaven's Tao signifies Tao's energy inside all the beings in the hologram.

In other words, it is Hossho 法性, the nature of manifestation. (☞See Hossho stays low 76-9)

Tao does not judge.

It seems that the limited capacity of human beings judge.

Tao's energy inside your hologram has no favoritism.

There is neither good nor bad in Tao.

Then, what does "a good person" mean?

"A good person" means you.

True You are Tao.

Therefore, only you can sustain the Tao/hologram mechanism, Shin 心.

Japanese philosopher Kitaro Nishida 西田幾多郎 (1870 - 1945) says:

"Practically speaking, we have only one true Good, which is to find out the true Self. That's all."

(translated by Naoto Matsumoto; Book III, Chapter 13, The Perfect Good Action, «A Study of the Good 善の研究» ☞See A study of the Good 49-3 and Goodness 49-5)

[Note]
What is the true Self?
"It is the true body of the cosmos", Nishida answers. (Ditto)
The true body of the cosmos is the Tao/hologram mechanism, Shin 心.

They met each other at a high school in Kanazawa, Ishikawa prefecture, Japan. High school education is no longer available exclusively for the elite these days while its level is not so academically "high" as the name declares.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 74-3 Fear of End

Today's Tao

If people are always afraid of the end of life, I can arrest those who do something strange and end their life. Who dares? (Ch.74)

Don't be fooled by strange stories.

"After the decomposition of your body, your soul goes to the sea of eternity."

Has anyone told you something like that?

Watch out!

Those who say something strange as this are worth being arrested, Lao Tzu insists.

Zen Master Dogen repeatedly cautions us:

"We must not think that our individual spirit goes somewhere after life.

There is no such thing as the sea of eternity."

(Soku shin ze butsu 即心是仏 and Bendowa 弁道話, «Shobogenzo». ☞See also The body decomposes 16-17)

There is no such a thing as an individual spirit.

Life is like a stack of cards.

Holograms are the cards and life is a stack of them, we can think.

Life does not exist as a being.

It is a name for the combination of holograms.

If life doesn't exist, no one can scare us, telling the end of it.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 67-6 Send Love

Today's Tao

The first one is to send Love. (Ch.67)

The first treasure is "to send Love".

This Love signifies not only the feeling between two people but the energy that sustains all the beings.

You can call it Tao, Buddha, Zen, the Higher Being, or whatever you think appropriate.

The expression is the translation of the Kanji / Chinese character 慈 [ji].

Receiving and sending this energy Love is the basis of the mechanism, which has plenty of names, including 心 [shin], 転法輪 [tenborin], and Yin Yang circle.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 62-10 Highly appreciated

Today's Tao

Therefore, it's appreciated by the world under the sky. (Ch.62)

What is the treasure?

It is Tao.

What is "the world under the sky"?

The world is your hologram.

Therefore, the last sentence of Chapter 62 Treasure is interpreted:

"Tao is appreciated by your hologram".

Your hologram includes your own self, other people, all the material beings, and even thoughts and feelings.

Here we have a precious key, or Kanreisu (a bar / spring).

Everything exists in order to appreciate, love, and accept Tao through other beings and non-beings.

It means that no elements in the hologram interfere with each other.

What?

That's right.

There is no cause and effect inside the hologram no matter how much it appears otherwise.

The sole cause and effect takes place between you and Tao.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 59-1 Don't waste

Today's Tao

To govern the people and work for heaven, the best way is not to waste any as if you store the harvest. (Ch.59)

"The people" and "heaven" signify the hologram.

Don't try to "govern" or "work" on your hologram.

"The best way" is to try not to waste your hologram, which stimulates you as a catalyst.

What is "not to waste" the hologram?

How do we do it?

Don't worry.

It is nothing too extraordinary or metaphysical.

It is simple.

For example, don't waste your ballpoint pen, paper or electricity.

Don't waste the lives of other beings. When you eat their meat or grains, chew it well and appreciate the life inside.

In short, accept all with respect "as if you store the harvest".

Tao Te Ching Chapter 56-7 Kanshiketsu / Like dust

Today's Tao

Be like dust. (Ch.56)

Try to be the least important being.

That's the best way to accept the world (=your hologram) as it is.

Don't feed your ego.

Be like dust.

Or, be an [excrement] scraper.

Zen Buddhists say:

"Buddha is a dry [excrement] stick"

(糞かきべら [kuso kaki bera] / 乾屎橛 [kanshiketsu] in Japanese).

It is a piece of wood to clean one's bottom after he has relieved nature.

Buddha is the fundamental energy.

So is Tao.

So is Love.

Therefore, please remember that, in every being, even in the scraper that has cleaned many Asian bottoms, you can find Buddha, Tao, Love, or whatever you call the energy.

☞After a day's work, you are tired and don't want anything complicated. All you need is a bit of laughter. If so, a Japanese noodle Western movie «Tampopo» is highly recommended. Unlike their Italian counterpart, Macaroni Western, this Japanese noodle Western is not about guns and gangsters, but it is seriously about noodles. Japan enjoys "Three Musketeers" of the Japanese noodles: Soba (buckwheat noodles), Udon (Fat wheat noodles), and Ramen (yellowish Chinese noodles). In the film, some outlaws of the noodle business get together and help a woman create a high-quality noodle dish at her near-out-of-business Ramen joint. It is sort of a modern-day version of «Seven Samurai» a la Juzo Itami, a director who finds humor at unusual places. Good laughter guaranteed. Well, if you are too tired and even a comedy cannot cheer you up, you always have a true Kurosawa film. How about «Red Beard» the great doctor tonight? It will inject you plenty of energy.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 53-8 Hologram is Not Tao

Today's Tao

A thief's luxury is not Tao. (Ch.53)

"A thief's luxury" represents your hologram.

So, the hologram is not Tao.

Be careful.

Your hologram is a manifestation of Tao, but not Tao itself.

What is a hologram, really?

Master Dogen explains it very well in his Shobogenzo:

"The entire world is a mind and land. The entire world is flowers and feelings. Since the entire world is flowers and feelings, the entire world is an ume flower. Since the entire world is an ume flower, the entire world is Buddha's hologram."

尽界は心地なり、尽界は華情なり、尽界華情なるゆゑに、尽界は梅華なり。尽界梅華なるがゆゑに、尽界は瞿曇の眼睛なり。

(Baika 梅華, «Shobogenzo»)

Did you get it?

The world = mind + material beings = visual images + feelings = an ume flower = a hologram

☞Go Nagai, the author of «Devilman», was born in 1945, in Wajima (in Ishikawa prefecture as were Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki and Kitaro Nishida). Nagai intentionally mixed the elements of carnal desire with his Manga creation. With or without knowing it, he was following the same steps as Lady Murasaki Shikibu («The Tale of Genji / Genji monogatari») and Ihara Saikaku («The life of an Amorous Woman / Koshoku Ichidai Onna», «The life of an Amorous man / Koshoku Ichidai Otoko»). Please don't blame Japanese Manga for being too explicit. It hurts the feelings of those who love Japan's traditional literature. Thank you for your open-mindedness in advance.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 39-11 Gods rest

Today's Tao

If gods were not spiritual, they might rest. (Ch.39)

Everything is a god.

You are a god, too.

In Shintoism in Japan, we express it as "yaoyorozu no kami gami 八百万の神々 (=eight million gods)".

All the objects, all the living beings, even words and thoughts, of course, your own self; all of them are gods.

Your so-called reality is a collection of gods. You must respect every aspect of it.

Don't waste your food because it is a god.

Chew it completely and receive its life with respect.

Don't throw away your ball point pen before you finish all the ink inside.

For the ink is also a god like you.

Everything is the manifestation of Tao.

Don't let the Tao/hologram cycle rest.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 29-9 Imbalance

Today's Tao

Therefore, the sage stays away from imbalance. (Ch.29)

A: "Master Bonbon, I don't know what to do."

B: "Meditate and think like a chosen super being, and you will see the answer."

A: "Yes, Master Bonbon, I will think. I will think. I will think… Oh, my god, I don't see the answer. I don't know what to do."

You don't need a superhuman effort.

You'd rather avoid any superhuman way.

No superhuman act is natural.

If you need an answer right now right here, ask water.

Let's think what water might do in the situation.

Water may avoid confrontation and try to look for balance.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 27-7 Things = Prayers

Today's Tao

He helps things very well. So, he abandons no things. (Ch.27)

Don't break things. They also have souls.

Don't waste their lives when you eat animals or plants. Chew them well and assimilate them into your body completely.

Don't hit the keys on your computer too hard even though you are frustrated.

Don't you hear their cry? "Please, master, don't hit me like your enemy."

Like living beings, objects are prayers.

When you accept them as they are, you turn the prayer wheel.

In order to give you opportunities to turn your prayer wheel, everything exists.

So, don't abandon things, please.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 25-4 Independence

Today's Tao

It's independent. It doesn't change. (Ch.25)

Tao creates your hologram (=the world), which includes your own self.

The explanation is supposed to end here, but you can say that firstly Tao creates your "self" and body, then in your brains you project the holographic images of the rest of the world.

Therefore, your hologram doesn't affect Tao.

It is independent of the world (=your hologram) though it manifests itself through the worldly beings.

Although Tao is called the fundamental energy, it doesn't change its form like other forms of energy.

Please visit Tao by Matsumoto / Chapter 25.

Today's text is part of Rapid Decoded, a brief and easy commentary on Ch.25.
